Schwartzman

“Pass The Bowl” is VH1’s ongoing interview series, wherein celebrities contribute questions to our bowl and fellow celebs later draw a question.
Excused’s Iliza Shlesinger: What’s your favorite thing about being an American?
Jason Schwartzman: Well, there are a lot of things about being an American that I think are great, but my favorite thing - and I mean this in all sincerity - is jury duty. A lot of people get their jury duty summons and it’s an annoying thing, and they think “Agh, I’ve got to go to jury duty.” But it’s actually an incredible right we have as Americans, to go to the court and actually sit on a jury and be part of a case and the legal system. I think I’ve been called to jury duty probably more times - probably a couple of them have been practical jokes - but I’ve been called down to jury duty quite a lot and every time I do have a thing where I’m like “Ahh, I don’t wanna go to that,” but I get there and I feel kinda thrilled, like “This is incredible.”
VH1: Can you recall one of your best cases?
Jason: One of my finest cases… I’ve actually never been called on a jury. I’ve sat in the jury box a couple times. I was very afraid. You’ve gotta read three things - you have to say your name, your occupation and where you’re from, and I could barely get through any of it. I was so nervous because this judge is looking at me and these lawyers are staring at me. I don’t know if there’s something in my primordial DNA, in my lizard brain, that when I see a judge and lawyers, I start to feel guilty. I felt like I was on trial. Anyway, that’s a separate story, and probably more information than you needed. Some countries don’t get to take part in the legal system and I think it’s pretty cool that we do.
